Breaking ground: More social and affordable homes coming to regional Victoria
Posted on: 21/10/2026 - 12:22pm
Construction is under way on new social and affordable housing developments designed to support local communities across regional Victoria.
Major works have begun at 5 key projects in Delacombe (Ballarat), Virginia Hill (Bendigo), Benalla West, House Creek (Wodonga) and Colac that will deliver 449 modern, accessible and energy-efficient homes.
These major projects represent a significant investment in regional growth, creating local jobs during construction and providing long-term housing for families and individuals close to schools, transport and essential services.
The new homes will be energy efficient, making them easier to heat in winter and cool in summer. Features include double-glazed windows, insulation, solar panels and water tanks.
All homes have been designed to be accessible to suit people at all stages of life. Accessible features include step-free entry and paths, wider hallways and reinforced walls in bathrooms and toilets to allow for the future installation of grab rails.
More than 5,700 homes are already under way, in planning or completed in regional and rural Victoria, with even more to come. This is all part of the statewide $6.3 billion Big Housing Build, which includes the $1 billion Regional Housing Fund.
Ramping up activity
Early works are under way across all sites, including installing and upgrading essential services, and building new roads and fences. Home construction is underway at Delacombe and Benalla West and main works will begin soon across all sites on building more and better homes.
