Barak Beacon, Port Melbourne

Tag icon New building

We are redeveloping the Barak Beacon housing site to create more and better homes and quality public spaces for the Port Melbourne community.  The builder at the site is ICON.

This project will replace 87 social homes that were not fit for purpose, with 408 new social, affordable rental, market rental and specialist disability accommodation homes.

There will be a 46% uplift in social housing at the site to accommodate previous social housing renters and people on the Victorian Housing Register.

New homes at Barak Beacon will be delivered through a Ground Lease Model- A partnership approach to housing delivery where Homes Victoria leases the land to not-for-profit project partner Building Communities to finance, design, build, manage and maintain the new homes at the site for a 40-year term.

This means the land and homes will always remain in public ownership.  This project will be complete from late 2026 as part of the Victorian Government’s investment into social and affordable housing.
