Dorcas Street, South Melbourne

We’re delivering new modern and energy-efficient social housing in South Melbourne.

The Commonwealth and Victorian Government are working together through the Big Housing Build and the Housing Australia Future Fund to deliver 131 new social homes.

These homes will be delivered on the site of the old walk-ups at 182-196 Dorcas Street in South Melbourne.

This project will double the social housing in this area and provide safe and secure homes for Victorians who need them most.

It’s the first step in renewing the South Melbourne Housing Precinct. The vision is to create a safe, well-designed and well-connected neighbourhood.

We’ll work with residents and the community as we plan and design the new homes.

Construction will begin in mid-2026 and finish by 2029.

Community consultation

In September 2025, we asked local residents and the South Melbourne community what was important to them. The feedback we received during the consultation will help to inform the design of the current and future stages of the precinct redevelopment.

Thank you to everyone who provided valuable feedback.

There will be more opportunities for you to provide your feedback on the final designs for the new homes.

We take community feedback seriously and encourage you to participate in each stage of the planning and development process.

Relocations

All residents from the old walk-ups have been supported to move into new homes that suit their ongoing needs.

Relocated households will have the right to return to the new homes, based on their ongoing eligibility, needs, and suitability of the new homes.
