Help shape the future of South Melbourne
Posted on: 01/09/2025 - 9:27am

We are building a vision for the housing precinct at South Melbourne – and we want to hear from you.
The first stage of the redevelopment will deliver 131 social homes at 182 – 196 Dorcas Street. This is being delivered through a partnership between the Commonwealth Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) and the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build.
We are inviting local residents and the South Melbourne community to let us know what is important to you. Your ideas and feedback will help shape the future of the site.
The vision is to create a safe, well-designed and well-connected neighbourhood.
You can take part in the consultation.
About the project
The Commonwealth and Victorian Government are working together through the Housing Australia Future Fund to deliver 131 new social homes.
These homes will be delivered on the site of the old walk-ups at 182-196 Dorcas Street in South Melbourne.
This project will double the social housing in this area and provide safe and secure homes for Victorians who need them most.
It’s the first step in renewing the South Melbourne Housing Precinct.
Construction of the new homes will start with early works in June 2026 and be complete by 2029.
When the new social housing is completed, relocated renters will have a right of return to the neighbourhood based on their ongoing needs, eligibility and suitability of new homes.
