Maureen’s story: New beginnings in Richmond.

Posted on: 17/02/2026 - 10:01am

Maureen embraced a new beginning in a new, modern apartment after living in her older social housing unit for 30 years – and she couldn’t be happier.

Long-time Richmond resident Maureen adores her view of the city. That, and how peaceful her new home is.

“At night, I like to watch the city lights,” she says.

Maureen knows a thing or 2 about Richmond. She’s lived in the area for 53 years – long enough to raise a family, become part of the community and see her neighbourhood grow and change.

“I know a lot of the people, even the shopkeepers. I’ve seen changes, but I’m happy here.”

When the opportunity came to relocate as part of the High-Rise Redevelopment underway in Richmond , Maureen didn’t have to think twice about whether to stay local.

“At my age, I’ve got to think of my future, and I wanted to be able to get to the shops easily – if I want a loaf of bread or a bottle of milk, I just walk over to the supermarket.”

Maureen wanted to stay connected to her beloved Richmond community and all the amenities which she enjoys. She was offered a home in Box Hill closer to family, but she knew she wanted to stay put.

“I attend St Vincents Hospital every three months and it’s easy for me to get to. I’ve got family in Ringwood and Mernda, and the train is close by. So, it’s easy and convenient.”

Being close to supermarkets and health services is just one of the benefits of her new apartment – part of our newly completed development on Elizabeth Street

It’s nice and quiet – it’s peaceful

The modern apartments have dishwashers, private laundries, secure entry, and reverse-cycle heating and cooling to ensure residents stay comfortable year-round.

It’s a big step up from the older public housing units that many residents, like Maureen, used to call home.

“When these were completed, I mentioned to my relocation officer that I’d like one of these if there was one available for me.”

Maureen says her relocations experience went smoothly, thanks to the support she received.

“My main concern was whether my furniture would fit in the new apartment, but it’s quite spacious.

“The removalists were very good. They were very professional – nothing was damaged.”

Maureen is now happily settled in her new home surrounded by pictures of her loved ones, and she couldn’t be more pleased.

“I’ve lived in the area for 53 years. I’ve accumulated a lot of things… but everything went okay …. I’m settled now and I love the apartment. It’s very, very nice – better than what I expected.”

When she’s not enjoying her new view, Maureen takes comfort in the quiet and calm of her new home and, of course, that beautiful view. “It’s nice and quiet – it’s peaceful.”
