First Peoples Home Ownership Program opens
Posted on: 28/11/2025 - 1:11pm
The First Peoples Home Ownership Program is open and ready to help First Peoples in Victoria buy homes of their own. The program is run by Homes Victoria in partnership with Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations. It’s funded through the Big Housing Build.
It offers a range of grants including:
- Home Buyer Booster – $2,500 to help with legal and administrative costs.
- Deposit contribution – for every dollar you contribute towards your deposit, we’ll match it up to a maximum of $20,000.
- New builds – if you’re buying or building a newly constructed home, you can receive an extra $5,000 on top of the deposit contribution.
- Land transfer (stamp) duty helper – a grant contribution, matching up to $10,000 of land transfer duty cost incurred through the transfer of land into the person's name. The grant amount will be determined based on the actual land transfer duty payable, up to a maximum of $10,000.
Who is eligible
To be eligible for the grants you must:
- be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (Confirmation of Aboriginality is required)
- currently reside and intend to purchase a home in Victoria
- have an individual or household income of no more than $245,000 per annum
- not currently own a home at the time of applying
- have documented pre-approval from a financial provider.
Why it matters
Home Ownership is a big step for individuals and families. By assisting with upfront costs and deposit requirements, the program provides targeted support throughout the purchasing process and promotes stable, sustainable long term home ownership.
Homes Victoria is proud to partner with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs). The involvement of ACCOs means the program is delivered in a culturally safe way, working alongside communities for better reach and support.
Get started
If you’re interested, it’s best to talk with a lender or financial advisor to understand how much you can borrow and what kind of property you could buy. Then you’ll need to gather documents like proof of income, identity, address, mortgage pre-approval and confirmation of Aboriginality.
