What does having a home mean to you?

They say a house is built with wood and beams, but a home is built with love and dreams.
It’s a sentiment we often hear echoed when we chat to social housing residents across Victoria.
Our mission is to support all Victorians to have access to safe, secure and affordable housing because we know what it means to have a place to call home.
It is the foundation for each person and family’s health, wellbeing and safety. A home enables people to participate in community and the workforce, and to live their best possible life.
But don’t take our word for it, our residents
“It means that I have stability, long term stability, long term security. A place that you look forward to coming back to,” Trudy told us.
“A safe roof over mine and my daughter’s head.”
Trudy had been living in her rental home for 8 years when it was unexpectedly sold. She was given 3 months to find a new place to live.
Trudy struggled to find somewhere affordable and stable for her and her daughter Ella to live.
“I had to take action really quick because we were looking at becoming homeless,” she said.
Trudy reached out to community housing organisation YWCA for support. Together, they were able to find a new home before the 3-month deadline was up.
As part of the Big Housing Build, we’re creating 12,000 new homes across the state over the next 4 years. It’s Victoria’s largest investment in social and affordable housing in its history, creating over 40,000 jobs and $6.5 billion in economic activity across Victoria.
We’re also planning for the long term, to ensure this generation as well as the next has a place to call home because stability means so much to our residents.
“It means I can flourish in life. It means livability, finding comfort and love. Some where, where I feel connected. Housing that will last me for the rest of my life,” Jasmine says.
Jasmine and her dog, Penny, were among renters who were welcomed to new social housing in the regional suburb of Belmont in Geelong.
Jasmine faced ongoing challenges to find a safe and suitable place to live throughout her life, including periods of time where she experienced homelessness.
Moving into social housing has given Jasmine a sense of security that has allowed her to pursue her passions, including volunteering in her local community.
We’re working closely with industry, the not-for-profit sector and the community to build a sustainable housing system that can deliver for generations to come.
And, above all, we’re ensuring more Victorians have a place to call home.
