Welcoming residents to new homes at Banksia Gardens
Posted on: 30/10/2026 - 9:45am
122 new social homes are now complete at Banksia Gardens, Broadmeadows, with residents starting to move in.
Delivered as part of the Commonwealth Government’s Social Housing Accelerator Program and the Victorian Government’s Big Housing Build, the new homes are a mix of one-, 2-and 3-bedroom apartments. They are modern, accessible and energy efficient.
The new homes have been designed to modern liveability and sustainability standards, with features like:
- modern kitchens and bathrooms
- double-glazed windows
- energy and water efficient appliances and fittings
- wider doors and hallways
- spacious cupboards and wardrobes
- step-free entrances
The new site also has a sheltered BBQ area and a gathering space, flexible ground floor spaces for residential and non-residential uses, quality landscaping and a new cycling and walking path connecting Coleraine Street to Cob Close.
The homes will be managed by Unison, a registered, not-for-profit community housing organisation, providing tenancy management and maintenance services.
They will also provide residents with access to support, resources and opportunities to sustain their housing, feel at home, and connect with their local community.
Maintaining connection to Country
We consulted with Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Traditional Owners throughout the planning and design process to acknowledge and celebrate Indigenous culture across the development.
The new buildings and pathways will have Indigenous signage and an outdoor gathering space for community to come together, which will include Indigenous elements and designs on the walking path.
There will also be a mural created by Liwik Yiyah Consulting. They are a First Nations-led creative studio blending cultural storytelling with contemporary design, founded by Indigenous artist Alex Kerr.
The artwork is centred around the 6 layers of Wurundjeri Country, reflecting the deep and interconnected relationship Wurundjeri people have with Country. Each layer is connected and plays an important role within Wurundjeri culture and our understanding of Country.
What is social housing?
Social housing is government-subsidised housing that can be run by the government (public housing) or a not-for-profit Community Housing Organisation (community housing).
Both types of housing provide:
- secure, long-term housing for people in need, with applications for both through the Victorian Housing Register
- the same rights and protections for residents under the Residential Tenancies Act
- very low rents, based on a percentage of household income and some community housing residents who may be eligible for Commonwealth Rent Assistance
