Pets at our place: meet Minnie and Buddy
Posted on: 28/11/2025 - 12:04pm
Pets are more than just animals. For many people, they are family and close companions. They help people feel less lonely and more connected to others. In social housing, pets also help bring neighbours together.
Pets At Our Place is our way of saying thanks to residents for their commitment to creating a sense of community with the help of their pets. It also helps us show the wide range of pets living in social housing.
Every year, we create a calendar featuring some of the wonderful furry, fluffy, feathery and scaley friends living in social housing. Congratulations to the 12 residents and their special friends who feature in this year’s calendar.
Meet some of the stars
Trish and Minnie the Dachshund
Warrnambool / Gunditjmara
‘I adopted Minnie after my kids grew up and I was a bit lonely, I thought having a dog, a little friend, would be great. Minnie’s a toss-up between a cat and a dog, and she’ll give you a hug and kiss when you need it the most. We roll balls back and forth to each other, I hide toys in her bedding for her to dig and find, and we play hide and seek. She’s such a joy.’
Lynette and Bev, Sky and Ice the budgies, and Furball the cat
West Footscray / Bunurong Country
‘I love my animals, and enjoy their company so much. The birds are so nice to have in the home, with the chitter chatter in the background.’
Marcia and Buddy the Cat
St Kilda / Bunurong Country
‘I love Buddy very much. He sleeps with me at night and keeps me warm. He sits on the couch with me to watch television and I love that.’
Where can I collect a calendar?
The 2026 calendars are available for collection from DFFH local housing offices and a number of community housing organisations around the state. You can also download a digital copy.
