New homes for women over 55 at Summerhill Village
Posted on: 10/09/2025 - 10:02am

Older women and families have now moved into their new homes at Summerhill Village. This is a purpose-built social housing community in the heart of West Footscray.
We delivered the $32.3 million redevelopment in partnership with United Housing Cooperative. The project includes 49 new social housing homes – almost double the number of homes that used to be there.
The old 1960s building was once the Footscray Lions Senior Citizens Village. It no longer met community needs.
United Housing and Lions Club of Footscray worked with residents. Together, they designed new homes that would suit the people living in them.
The transformation includes modern and energy-efficient homes, plus community gardens and an orchard. These spaces are designed to build a sense of connection and security. Providing a place for one of the fastest growing groups of homeless people in Victoria.
The homes are also close to local services like the Footscray hospital, public transport, supermarket and Whitten Oval.
Residents can live in the village independently. United Housing Co-op will be there to provide support when needed.
We have invested more than $17.3 million to this project and created up to 257 jobs for the community.
What is social housing?
The Social Housing Growth Fund was established in 2018 to increase new social housing in Victoria. Social housing is short and long-term rental housing that is owned and run by the government or not-for-profit organisations.
Social housing is generally subsidised for people on low incomes who need housing.
This includes:
- adults and children escaping family violence
- women over the age of 55
- Aboriginal Victorians
- people with disability
- people those experiencing mental ill-health.
