Construction milestone reached at the Essex Street redevelopment

We recently celebrated the top out of our Essex Street, Prahran site. This means the main building structures are now in place, which marks a key milestone in the project. 

We're redeveloping the site together with our partner Building Communities, including builder ICON. The project is replacing ageing housing with 155 modern and high-quality new homes.    This includes dedicated social housing for women and children at risk of homelessness. 

The project will be complete from late 2026, and it will increase social housing at the site by 37%. There will be a mix of one, 2-, 3- and 4-bedrooms to suit different-sized households.  

Two leading community housing providers will manage the new homes, including:  

• social homes
• affordable homes
• market rental homes
• specialist disability accommodation homes.

Women’s Property Initiatives will manage all social housing at the site. They will provide tenancy management and support services for women and children.    

Community Housing Limited will manage all other tenancies. They will operate on site and help renters settle into their new homes. They will also deliver different services and activities.    

The redevelopment will feature high quality open spaces. This includes landscaped parks and gardens. There will also be a café opening onto a central public terrace between the main buildings.     

The project has now moved into the internal fit-out stage. Contractors will be installing flooring, ceilings, partitions, services, joinery and all the finishes. This project phase ensures the homes are ready for residents to move into next year.

Check out our progress delivering 677 new homes in South Yarra and Prahan. Replacing 267 older walk ups with new social, affordable rental, market rental and Specialist Disability Accommodation homes, these new developments will include on-site management, space for a cafe, picnic area and quality outdoor spaces.
