Virginia Hill has a long history, including gold mining and other land uses. Soil remediation makes sure the ground is safe to build new homes for the community. 

Soil remediation means cleaning up and preparing the ground so it's safe for future use. At Virginia Hill, this involves:  

• Testing the soil to understand what’s there.
• Carefully managing areas of soil that don’t meet today’s standards.
• Bringing in clean fill and leveling the ground to prepare for building foundation.  

The works will be carried out by a specialist contractor. Environmental consultants representing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Victoria and Homes Victoria will provide ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with the highest standards. 

Main works to build the new homes will begin in mid-2026 once early works has been completed. 

We understand that trees and vegetation hold significant value to the local community, and we always aim to retain them wherever possible. To safely build new homes on this site, however, some trees and vegetation will need to be removed.  

Our design team has worked hard to retain trees wherever possible, particularly those along Kirkwood Road, Sailors Gully Road and Darling Street.

At the same time, we are committed to replacing what is lost and enhancing the neighbourhood’s green spaces: 
 

• Extensive replanting: We will plant more trees than those removed, supported by a robust, durable and sustainable landscaping plan. This plan considers the long-term needs of the community, both in public spaces and on individual home lots. 
   
• Creating new green spaces: Our landscaping will improve the amenity of the area by creating open, green places for residents and the community to enjoy. 
   
• Re-use of felled logs: Timber from trees that must be removed will be incorporated into the landscaping.

Our contractor will use control measures, such as dust suppression and noise reduction equipment, to reduce impacts to neighbours as much as possible. 

To maintain safety, access to the site will be restricted to professional contractors only. 

All works will be compliant with WorkSafe Victoria and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Victoria regulations.
