How about this for a school excursion!
Students from Tate Street Primary School visited our construction site at Ormond Road, East Geelong. They spent the day learning all about how we build new homes.
The school is a neighbour of the construction site and students have watched us build 54 new social housing homes since construction started in late 2024.
On the day, 13 students took a tour of the construction site and watched machinery like excavators in action.
They also spent time decorating their own hard hats to take home and drawing the building where they have the most fun.
“We are really excited about this community collaboration with Tate Street Primary School,” Alchemy’s Social Impact Coordinator, Grace Jeavons, said. “We thought it would be an awesome idea to have the students on site and show them up close what they’ve been watching for the past year.”
Alchemy is the main works contractor for this Homes Victoria project, helping us to build more and better homes for Victorians.
“Community collaborations like this with Tate Street Primary School are an important part of the work we do at Homes Victoria,” said Cara Bawden, Senior Director at Homes Victoria. “It was great that the students enjoyed their day on site and it gave them a sneak peek into the new homes before we finish the project later this year.”
54 new social housing homes almost complete
The 54 new homes are delivered as part of the $6.3 billion Big Housing Build. They will be complete and ready for new renters in mid-2026, giving more Victorians a safe and secure place to call home.
The new homes replace 18 ageing social homes that were not fit for purpose. This is an uplift of 36 homes and triple the amount of social housing at Ormond Road.
The new homes are a mix of one-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments. They are modern, comfortable, energy-efficient, and close to schools, employment, transport and services.
Each home has its own private outdoor courtyard or balcony, and access to shared facilities like barbecues, gardens and community spaces.
More homes for regional Victoria
We’re building more than 4,700 social and affordable homes across regional Victoria, with more to come.
In the Greater Geelong area, this includes more than 830 homes completed or underway. This is all part of the Big Housing Build, which includes the Regional Housing Fund.
