Victoria’s first 3D-printed social homes are underway

We’re delivering 2 social housing homes in Norlane in partnership with Hamlan Homes.
Ordinarily this corner-block development wouldn’t be any different to your standard build. But what makes this project exciting is the use of cutting-edge 3D-printing technology.
A state-of-the-art 3D-printing machine is creating the concrete walls of both units. The concrete mix is tailor-made to withstand Australian conditions.
Following a pre-programmed path, the machine squeezes wet concrete mix into long lines. These layers build up to form the internal and external walls of the homes. The rest is much the same as a traditional build.
Using 3D-printed concrete in the build also brings other benefits, including:
- reduced delivery timeframes
- less waste during the construction process
- increased energy efficiency.
Due to concrete’s high thermal mass, the walls will better absorb the sun in the winter and stay cooler in the summer. This means more comfortable homes and cheaper energy bills for renters.
Once complete, the homes will achieve an 8.5-star NatHERS average rating (one and a half stars above standard). Each 3-bedroom home will also include a solar PV system.
These will be the first social homes in Victoria delivered using the new technology. The project is funded under the Victorian Government’s Regional Housing Fund.
The homes are on track to be ready for renters by Christmas this year.
Shojun Concrete and 3D-printing specialist Contour 3D have helped Hamlan deliver the 3D-printed walls.
It’s one example of how we’re using modern methods to deliver more and better homes for our regions.
More homes for regional Victoria
We’re building more than 5,700 social and affordable homes across regional Victoria, with more to come.
In the Greater Geelong area, this includes more than 970 homes completed or underway. This is all part of the Big Housing Build, which includes the Regional Housing Fund.
