More and better social housing for Ararat

Social housing in regional Victoria has received another boost thanks to the completion of 16 new homes in Ararat, located nearly 200 kilometres west of Melbourne.

We partnered with Elmstone Property Group to deliver the new one-bedroom units which will provide long-term social housing for singles and couples who are in need of a safe and secure place to call home.

The Grano Street homes are located close to public transport and sporting facilities and will offer renters low-maintenance, energy-efficient and accessible living with easy access to local shops and services.

Each unit features all-electric appliances, an electric heat pump hot water service and large windows that provide natural light and cross-ventilation, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency.  This is backed up by a 6.1 tar NatHERS rating – which means it will be easier for residents to stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

The homes achieve a Silver-level Livable Housing Design standard meaning they have been designed with long-term liveability and flexibility in mind.  This includes an accessible parking space, a simple and efficient layout and a step-free bathroom, ensuring the homes are adaptable to residents’ changing needs.

This project was made possible through the Big Housing Build, with Homes Victoria investing more than $4 million in the development.

The new homes will be managed by a specialist not-for-profit community housing organisation.

Investing in Ararat and our regions

As of July 2025, 43 new homes have been completed in the Local Government Area of Ararat as part of the Big Housing Build and other social housing programs.

Of the Big Housing Build’s total $6.3 billion program funding, $2.25 billion will be invested across regional and rural Victoria.
