Demolition of Elgin Towers complete

We have completed demolition of the 2 red brick Elgin Towers in Carlton. The site is now being prepared for construction of 2 new social housing towers.  

The removal of the outdated towers was carefully carried out using equipment lifted by crane to the top of the buildings. Demolition then took place floor by floor.   

The red brick towers are the first to be demolished under the High-Rise Redevelopment Program. The program will see a further 42 ageing social housing towers across Melbourne replaced with homes that are modern, accessible and energy-efficient. 

The new Elgin Towers will provide 248 social housing apartments. This is a 26% increase on the previous number of homes at the site.  

Construction of the new towers will start in May and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
