Information for relocating residents
We sometimes have to relocate residents to support the work we do to increase and improve our social housing.
When it’s time to move, residents are given plenty of notice and supported every step of the way. Our relocations team will help you find a suitable home according to your needs and preferences and also support you with the move.

4. Staying connected
5. Coming back
1. Learning more
You might not be relocating right now but you can learn more about the process and see what's happening in other neighbourhoods, including new homes available to those residents.
2. Getting ready
When a new site is announced, residents are given lots of notice before they relocate. The relocations team will get in touch with each household and book a relocations appointment to understand your needs and preferences and find you a suitable property.
This includes your preferred location, and important things like:
- Health and service and providers
- Schools, childcare and jobs
- Accessibility needs
- Social, cultural and community connections
- Transport links and connections.
Relocation appointments are not rushed and can be wherever you feel comfortable, including in your home. We encourage you to bring a family member, or other support services. We will also arrange an interpreter if you ask for one.
At the end of the appointment, the relocations team will help you lodge a relocations application so they can begin looking for your new home.
3. Relocating
Once you receive a housing offer, you will get the chance to inspect the home and make sure that it is a good fit. When you accept the offer the relocations team will work with your household to decide on a suitable moving day.
If the home we've offered you doesn't meet your needs, we will talk to you to understand these needs so we can find you a suitable home. Homes Victoria will book the removalists and cover all reasonable moving costs, including:
- Removalist fees
- Packing materials, e.g. tape, boxes
- Connections fees for utilities like electricity, gas, telephone, and internet
- Mail redirection costs
- Disposal of any items you don’t want to move to your new home.
On the agreed moving day, the removalist will take your packed boxes and furniture to your new home. Homes Victoria will arrange and pay for disposal of any items you do not want to take with you. We also help connect you with new services if you are moving to a new neighbourhood.
4. Staying connected and getting involved
We will keep you informed and involved in the planning for sites that are planned for housing redevelopments.
You can also play a part in the design of new homes and neighbourhoods of these sites.
5. Coming back
The time it takes to undertake housing redevelopments on our sites depends on the size and complexity of the housing redevelopment project.
Where housing is being redeveloped on the site you relocated from, you have the right to return when the redevelopment is complete based on your ongoing needs, eligibility and the suitability of new homes.
You can also choose to stay in your relocation home if this suits you better at the time.
