Wightman Street, Footscray is ready for renters

Posted on: 16/12/2025 - 3:20pm

The brand-new 18-storey building on Wightman Street is now complete.

A total of 92 new homes (a mix of one -, 2- and 3-bedrooms) for people who need them most. Delivered in partnership with housing provider VincentCare Community Housing (VCCH).

Footscray is only 5 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD. This gives residents easy access to public transport, local shops, and essential services.

This project will provide safe, affordable housing for people experiencing housing stress.

It will also deliver ongoing support to vulnerable Victorians through the broader organisation of St Vincent de Paul Society.

The project also supported the local economy, creating around 470 jobs during construction.

What is social housing?

Social housing is long-term rental housing. These homes are for people who face challenges that make it difficult to secure safe and suitable housing in the private rental market.

Public housing and community housing are both types of social housing.

Community housing is managed by not-for-profit community housing organisations. Public housing is managed by the state government.

Renters who live in community housing have the same rights as public housing renters under the Residential Tenancies Act (1997).
