Victorian renters happy with new social housing repair crews

Since it launched in February 2023, the Local Maintenance Repair Crew has completed over 16,000 repairs in social housing across metro and regional Victoria with residents consistently reporting high levels of satisfaction.

Homes Victoria Precinct Services Manager Scott Hollingsworth said the response from residents has been great. 

“The aim of the Local Maintenance Repair Crew pilot is to have a handy person available quickly and easily,” Scott said. 

“We’ve had positive feedback from those who have had work done and real excitement about the fact that this service is available.”

North Melbourne resident June is happy that there is someone nearby to do minor repairs around the house quickly. “This is a very good thing; it will make quite the difference” June said. 

97% of residents surveyed after their repairs reported that they were very satisfied with the help they received from the Local Maintenance Repair Crew staff. 

Residents liaison officer Luke Terzi said the best part of his job is working with residents. 

“As Residents Liaison Officer, we’re in the field and tenants can contact us in person,” Luke said. 

“They see very big improvements in their home and living standards. 

“The best part of my job is visiting tenants and communicating with them, also fixing and solving problems.”

The Local Maintenance Repair Crew provides residents with a Renter Liaison Officer they can contact to arrange for a local handy person to carry out simple repairs such as fixing door hinges, patching walls, minor painting, and tile repair. 

The Crew is currently operational in North Melbourne, Flemington, Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, Wodonga, and Sale. 

In 2024 the program will expand to more locations across metropolitan and regional Victoria.
