Relocating Darko for a fresh start at 74

Having recently relocated from public to community housing. Like many people facing a move, Darko had concerns at first. However, these worries quickly disappeared:
‘It was really easy. We didn’t need to worry and didn’t need to spend money for the moving or the removalist.’
From the beginning, the relocations team handled every detail. They organised a moving date that suited Darko and provided him with everything he needed for the move.
‘They gave me boxes, bubble wrap, rolls of sticky tapes and [were] very generous about leaving some unwanted furniture in my old apartment,' says Darko.
'It did not cost me anything.’
Darko described the process as ‘fantastically organised, with no stress or anxiety'.
When Darko saw his new apartment, he couldn’t have been happier.
‘I was so happy. Day-by-day, I feel more content [in the new apartment]’
His new home has modern amenities that still feel novel to Darko, who lived in his previous, older apartment for 20 years.
‘My favourite things are the balcony…I’ve got a lemon [tree] outside with fruits on it already!’
‘Oh my God’, he adds ‘aircon! It’s reverse; it’s magic!’
A passionate cook, Darko loves his new kitchen and happily shares recipes he makes on his brand-new oven and stove top.

'The oven is perfect …it’s so fast!'
Darko explains how safe he feels in his new building which includes secure key access and undercover carparking.
Whilst he acknowledges the small adjustments in rent, he says the subsidies he receives have helped to cover the difference.
For Darko – and others like him – the relocation experience shows that moving doesn’t have to be stressful.
‘As an older person... I can say it the relocation process was easy as!’
