Cranes up in Hampton East: Meet Big Joe, Lifto-Saurus Rex and Larry (the Lifter)

Posted on: 28/04/2025 - 12:30pm

Construction is officially underway on 285 more and better homes in Hampton East.

Three large tower cranes are getting to work at our Bluff Road site where we will build 170 social, 32 affordable and 83 market rental homes.

But a big job like this requires big ideas, which is why we consulted with the experts to help name the cranes.

Moorabbin Primary School students put their collective brainpower together and landed on Lifto-Saurus Rex, Big Joe and Larry (the Lifter) - perfect choices for this tall trio.

Four students recently visited the site to unveil the names and even got to chat with Big Joe's crane operator over the radio.

These two images were taken one month apart and show the construction progress at Bluff Road. The image on the left was from March and the image on the right was taken in April showing the development taking shape.

New homes coming soon to Hampton East

Works are progressing well on site as we get on with building more and better homes together with our project partner Building Communities.

We're on track to deliver the new homes and improved spaces for the Hampton East community from late 2026.

Some of the key features of the Bluff Road development include:

  • Children’s play space
  • Community garden
  • Picnic area
  • Landscaped gardens
  • Improved walking and cycling pathways throughout the site
  • On-site support for future residents

The Building Communities project group includes ICON as the builder and Community Housing Limited (CHL) as the community housing provider. Once the project is completed from late 2026, CHL will manage the new homes at Bluff Road, providing renters with on-site support. CHL will also carry out maintenance, asset management and community engagement programs for renters.

We are building the new homes at Bluff Road under our award-winning Ground Lease Model, in which Homes Victora leases the land to a project partner for 40 years to design, finance, build and manage new homes at the site.

The land and all assets return to Homes Victoria after 40 years, ensuring government land stays in government hands.
