Career pathways and training opportunities in construction at Simmons Street
Posted on: 21/05/2026 - 10:12am
We are supporting more young people to explore careers in the construction industry.
We recently hosted a group of 18-to-25-year-old's interested in a career in construction at Simmons Street.
The session was delivered in partnership with the project builder ICON, The Huddle and Ubuntu Project. It gave participants a real world look at the work that goes into building new homes.
They also spoke with industry representatives from ICON and Homes Victoria about career opportunities. Programs like The Huddle and the Ubuntu Project help make these experiences for young people possible.
Our housing projects are also creating hundreds of job and training opportunities for young people. And this is happening through support from the Victorian Government's Major Skills Guarantee.
The Simmons Street project is one of 4 redevelopment sites being delivered through our Ground Lease Model 2 program.
This program has employed 451 ICON apprentices, cadet and trainees. This includes 333 apprentices, 30 trainees and 88 cadets, which is a combined 267,494 dedicated hours of on-the-job work and training.
Thanks to these projects we are unlocking more job opportunities for young people in the construction industry. And we are doing this while supporting better housing outcomes for Victorians.
About Simmons Street, South Yarra
We're delivering 522 homes and community spaces at the Simmons Street site.
And we're doing this with our project partner Building Communities and their builder, ICON.
The project is delivering 273 social, 53 affordable and 196 market rental homes. The homes include one, 2- 3- and 4-bedrooms for different-sized families and households.
The Simmons Street project is being delivered through a Ground Lease Model. This is an innovative partnerships approach to housing delivery.
Homes Victoria leases the land to Building Communities to finance, design, build, manage and maintain the new homes on the site for 40 years.
This delivery model ensures that the land and homes remain in public ownership. They return to the management of Homes Victoria after 40 years.
The project is on track for completion in late 2026.
