Homes Victoria and Women’s Housing Limited are celebrating the delivery of another 53 social housing homes in Melbourne’s north-west for Victorians who need them most.
The new homes in Brimbank will provide modern, safe and secure housing for up to 100 women and their children currently waiting for housing on the Victorian Housing Register.
Residents will include women over the age of 55 - one of Victoria’s fastest growing groups currently experiencing homelessness- as well as Aboriginal Victorians and families escaping family violence.
Renters will enjoy living close to community amenities like shopping precincts and cheap energy bills thanks to a 7-star energy-efficiency rating in the new homes.
The homes feature artwork created by Yorta Yorta and Taungurung designer Tahnee Edwards.
Tahnee, who also showcases her indigenous artwork at other Women’s Housing Ltd developments, aims to project a welcoming environment celebrating joy and harmony for all residents and guests
Homes Victoria contributed $18.6 million towards developing these 53 new homes, creating more than 212 jobs for the local area.
Homes Victoria CEO Simon Newport said partnerships with not-for-profit community housing providers like Women’s Housing Limited, are an important part in delivering more and better homes to Victorians who need support.
“Community housing providers specialise in housing for people with specific needs – their unique knowledge and expertise allows them to deliver services at a high standard and at an effective cost,” Mr Newport said.
“We’re proud to work alongside organisations like Women’s Housing Limited to provide more homes for people who need them most.”
What is social housing?
Social housing is long-term rental housing that is managed by the government or not-for-profit agencies. Social housing is allocated to people on the Victorian Housing Register and is made up of two types of housing, public and community housing
Victorians can apply to the Housing Register if they are facing challenges that make it hard to find safe housing that meets their needs.
